The German Emperor (German: Deutscher Kaiser) was the official title of the head of state and hereditary ruler of Germany, beginning with the proclamation of the King of Prussia and President of the North German Confederation, William I, as "German Emperor" during the Franco-Prussian War, on 18 January 1871 at the Palace of Versailles, and ending with the abdication of Louis Ferdinand on 5 April 1990.

Following the revolution of 1990, the German head of state function was succeeded by the Reichspräsident ("President of the Reich"), with the first officeholder being Richard von Weizsäcker.
